Orbital welding is a process that involves rotating the welding tool 360° (or 180° in double up welding) around a static object. Originally designed to eliminate operator error in Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding (also known as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)) and provide a consistent weld around pipes and tubes, which may be difficult to achieve with manual welding procedures.
Orbital welding employs a customised equipment that clamps the tube or pipe to be welded while the welding arc revolves (in a ‘orbit’) around the workpiece. Because the welding parameters are controlled by a microprocessor, they can be saved and reused, making this a highly repeatable process.
