Lead plating is an utilitarian finish that generates a dull grey coating that is somewhat mottled. Lead plated components are vulnerable to washing stains and discolouration from handling due to the matte character of the deposit. If a bright and uniform look is required, the lead surface can be overplated with a thin covering of brilliant tin, or the deposit can be reflowed.
